"John Christopher Polit, the son of a former Ecuadorian official awaiting sentencing in the US, pleaded not guilty today to charges that he had helped his father launder bribes received from the Brazilian conglomerate Odebrecht and an insurance executive.

The arraignment, held before a magistrate judge in the Southern District of Florida, lasted two minutes, according to court records. Polit was released on a $14 million bond, with 14 co-signers, court records show.

Polit was charged with money laundering, conspiracy and engaging in transactions in proceeds of criminally derived property for causing the proceeds of his father’s bribery schemes to “disappear,” according to an indictment filed earlier this month. Polit used the funds to buy and renovate real estate, purchase restaurants, a dry cleaner and other businesses, the indictment said. He allegedly held the assets in the names of Florida-based companies registered in the names of associates."
