"I never did approve of generative Al, when it first arrived I wanted to know what it was, how it worked, if it could be used as a tool in my own work, if it would replace what I do completely - all those questions and more. I personally don't like to take against something if I haven't given it a chance and tried to understand it. In the end, l've decided it's an ethical choice, we either decide we're happy ripping off other people's work without credit, payment or choice in order to feed the Al dataset, or not. It's a matter of definition - either we decide that tapping in a few words on a keyboard is just as profound as going out into the world, living and understanding something about it, and challenging ourselves to articulate that in a complex and demanding art forms, or we don't."

"It's a matter of truth - I think we already have an increasingly disconnected relationship with what is actually demonstrably true in the world, and flooding the net with realistically convincing stills and video that are not true, is not going to help matters. Fiction is fine, but we need to know the difference between what is real and what is not. And finally, it's a matter of energy - the amount of energy being consumed by digital tech generally, and Al specifically, is terrifying, and I think unsustainable. So, as if it isn't obvious, although Al can help enormously in the sciences that make use of pattern recognition and prediction, I don't think Al has any place in our imaginative lives. I personally think the meaningless distraction of an infinite quantity of soulless artless humanless images, is not worth the collateral damage on our art, humanity and souls."
